Illustrated History of the Civil War: Images of an American Tragedy

The American Heritage History of the Civil War [UNABRIDGED]
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-01-20 Summary: The Civil War Bruce Catton ... In my opinion, still the best one volume book on the American Civil War. I use it as the primary text in a semester high school class. I find the writing clear and concise, yet with a high degree of moving readability. Something that is a good read for those wanting an overview of this crossroads event in our nation's history. ...more

[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-06-28 Summary: A Civil War Primer ... Originally released in conjunction with the television history "The Civil War" which aired on public television, this book is good enough to stand on its own merits. Geoffrey C. Ward subsequently began a long term professional association with documentary film maker Ken Burns and collaborated with him on additional book and film projects. Ward also distinguished himself with a biography of Franklin Delano Roosevelt ("A First Class Temperament"). Ward writes well and assembles his materials in a thorough manner. The ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-03-17 Summary: A great place to start... ... From the very beginning, I was enthralled with the PBS series by Ken Burns, The Civil War. So why it took me so many years to read The Civil War companion book, I'll never know. Written by Geoffrey Ward with Ric Burns and Ken Burns, it was like discovering lost treasure. The Civil War was a momentous event in the history of our nation, and thousands and thousands of books have been written on almost every possible angle. But if a Civil War neophyte had to bring himself up to speed as quickly as possible, this book ...more
Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | "America needed its great war of brothers," wrote Bruce Catton, "to weld in a terrible fire what had been and what might be. The story of the war needs retelling because it helped to change the future of the human race." The Civil War is America's great Iliad, and few would dispute that its outcome is evident in most social and political issues today. For a person seeking a single volume to serve as a captivating introduction and dependable guide through all the maze of battles and issues...more

[2] Rating: 4 Date: 2002-07-30 Summary: Not enough phtographs ... I was looking for more detail. It did not have enough actual photographs for me, there were too many paintins. If you want a history of the civil war there are good books to read. ...more
[3] Rating: 5 Date: 2005-07-06 Summary: Just What I Was Looking For ... This book was precisely the book I was looking for. This particlar book had maps and drawings that no other book had. I remember the book from my high school days and have looked everywhere to find it. I expected it to be an older book and the one I got was in great shape for its age. The seller was very concerned that I knew it was and older book and communicated with me to make sure I was satisfied. Boy!! was I. should have come to Amazon in the first place when I first started looking for the book. A lesson learned. ...more
[4] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-06-15 Summary: Superb Look at Civil War ... This superb overview of the civil war in photos, maps and illustrations makes you feel as if you're there in Federal Blue or Rebel Gray. One can learn much from author Bruce Catton's readable prose, or by merely viewing the hundreds of photo's and illustrations. Readers get a feel for the tragic conflict, from its pre-war controversies to the sad days when North and South were at each other's throats. We learn about military leadership, strategies, army life, battles, morale, slavery, sociology, politics, etc. Catton ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-03-02 Summary: EXCELLENT overview of the American Civil War. ... This was my second Civil War book, which I received for Christmas when I was 12 (thanks Mom!). My love of the subject probably has a lot to do with this excellent volume, which I pored over for many years. It is loaded with photos, illustrations, and maps as well as Bruce Catton's EXCELLENT narrative. While this narrative does not go into extensive detail (the enormous scope of the war prohibts this), it is clearly written and a treasure trove of knowledge for those interested in a one-volume overview of the Civil ...more

The Civil War: A History
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2001-06-11 Summary: Draws you into the fights! ... Harry Hansen's book was the first I read on the Civil War and it sparked me to read more. The battle descriptions are some of the best I have ever read, especially Hansen's handling of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg. This book takes you into the minds of the generals and common soldiers who waged the war and explains their actions in a clear and concise way. Not overly wordy, but having enough description to keep it interesting, this book is perfect for anyone who is just getting started on the Civil War, as it ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-05-18 Summary: Best Short History Book on the American Civil War ... This concise history book, on the American civil war, is an excellent introduction on the topic. If you have enjoyed reading,'Nicholas and Alexandra'(1960),by Robert K. Massie, then you will be quite pleased with this book also.It has the same intelligible writing style that flows and brings the reader along for the swift adventure.Hansen's Flaubert-like literary style brings the events to life far above what Bruce Catton has done.Catton's worthy writings focuses more on the epic battles' time-line events and factual ...more

[4] Rating: 4 Date: 2007-06-06 Summary: Excellent book but horrible edition ... After watching a recent history channel show, I realized how little I remembered of the civil war from school 40 years ago. Wanting to learn more I read several books and found this one to be the best for a concise coverage of the war. However the type in the $8.95 version is horrible. It goes from dark, thick and blurry, to thin and light. The margins and spacings vary and letters get dropped or partially cut off. I did see a larger paperback edition after I bought this one. It was almost twice the price, but probably ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2006-07-18 Summary: Great one-volume introduction to the Civil War ... If you only have time for one book on the Civil War, you ought to consider this. I thought when I picked it up that it might be rather plodding and just a recount of 'Grant moved here and Lee counterattacked'. I was wrong. The book sucks you in right away with the reasons and legislature behind the Civil War, like the Missouri Compromise, the Dred Scott decision, etc. How Lincoln fought Steven Douglas for the Senate seat in Illinois and lost, then won the election to become President. There is a wide range of speeches ...more

An Illustrated History of the Civil War
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2004-08-22 Summary: Great book ... As a rule, I'm not terribly fond of the "coffee table" history books produced by the editors of Time-Life Books. Usually, they opt for more glitz than substance and you end up with a pretty, but bland piece of history. However, this, I am very pleased to say, is a much better book than their usual effort. Although this is an illustrated history, the narrative that begins each chapter is very well written. The topics are interesting, especially the chapters on the abolitionists and the secessionists. They do an excellent ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2002-03-02 Summary: Wonderful book.... ... Nothing fascinates the student of American history quite like the Civil War and this book, with it's beautiful illustrations and illuminating essays, does much to bolster that fascination. Readers are introduced to the Civil War's unforgettable cast of characters: Lee, Jackson, Grant, and even the nameless legions of soldiers whose faces grace the photographs and whose courage and determination have become American legend. I'd have to agree with a previous reviewer that the photographs alone are worth the price of ...more
[3] Rating: 4 Date: 2001-11-15 Summary: An Illustrated History of the Civil War ... It is a good book to have in your personal library. The illustrations are compiled in good order. [4] Rating: 4 Date: 2002-04-27 Summary: a good Civil War book ... I just bought this Civil War book several days ago, and I'm very glad I did buy it. While it doesn't seem to go into much detail about the battles, it still seems to tell the story of the Civil War well. I did notice that it mentioned Stonewall Jackson being wounded at Chancellorsville, and how he had an arm amputated. I don't think it mentioned the detail that he didn't actually die from that wound; he died from pneumonia. Still, the pictures are intriguing, to say the least. One of the other reviewers mentioned that. ...more
[5] Rating: 5 Date: 2001-12-18 Summary: An Illustrated History of the Civil War ... I will make this short and sweet. I am a American Civil War student of many years. Within my library I have a nice collection of books on this subject. It seems that the common photographs are often repeated in the various books and seldom do I find an American Civil War photograph that I have not already seen. However, this book, "An Illustrated History of the Civil War", offers many photographs that this student had never seen. The book is well worth the price for the photographs alone, not to mention the text which ...more

United States History: Semester 1
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-04-15 Summary: An excellent way to learn or review ... I was wary at first of buying this because of only one sketchy amazon review. Aside from the cheesy country music that plays during the lessons every now and then, this is an excellent program that makes complex topics in united states history very simple. I wish they had this for every school subject. The quizzes with 100 multiple choice questions per disc (6 discs in all) are great review, and the questions are very SAT II-like. One warning though, you won't find every single topic in u.s. history. This software ...more

The Confederate Army 1861-65 (5): Tennessee & North Carolina (Men-at-Arms) (v. 5)
Customer Reviews — [1] Rating: 5 Date: 2008-02-10 Summary: The Confederate Army ... This is a most worthy men-at-arms series; like the book's description says, it shows the much more colorful side to the uniforms of the Confederate Army. One man depicted in the color plates for Volume One that I found particularly interesting was a soldier in the Union Light Infantry, a SC unit based on the British Black Watch (42nd Royal Highlanders). The plates are pretty much the highlight of this series, and show realistic looking soldiers surrounded by beautiful women and scenery, and baring all their various ...more
[2] Rating: 5 Date: 2007-11-05 Summary: Another high quality effort from Osprey ... Osprey Publishing has issued Volume 5 of their popular book, The Confederate Army 1861-65. A part of their sprawling Men-at-Arms series (this is book #441 in that series), this one covers the uniforms and arms of troops from Tennessee and North Carolina. Written by Ron Field and lavishly illustrated with Richard Hook's watercolors, this book is a worthy addition to the Osprey family. Editorial Reviews — ... Product Description | The common image of the Confederate Army during the Civil War is dominated by a limited number of early photographs of troops wearing the grey and butternut of the CS regulations and quartermaster issues. By contrast, this book examines the variety of uniforms worn by the Tennessee and North Carolina militia and volunteers brought together in the Confederate field armies, and the continuing efforts to clothe them as wear-and-tear gradually reduced this wide range of uniforms. A mass of...more
